How to Prepare for Traveling with Someone for the First Time

Most people can’t even imagine embarking on a journey by themselves, but finding a suitable traveling buddy is a demanding task. If you’re planning a trip with someone you’ve never traveled with before, here’s a couple of things you should keep in mind.

Money Talk

Every trip comes with a long list of expenses, so make sure to have a conversation about money before packing your bags. Try to figure out if you and your friend have a similar budget, and be very open about how much money you’re comfortable with spending.

While stopped at the US/Canadian border, @_beclee and I were thoroughly questioned. Part of the conversation went like this: . Immigration officer: “Where do you live?” . Us: “Massachusetts and California.” (I don’t think he’d have appreciated the truth, which technically, is “everywhere”) . Immigration officer: “How do you two know each other?” . Us: (brief hesitation, an exchange of looks, and a laugh) “Instagram?” . . In July of last year, while traveling in Bosnia, Becca hit me up on IG through my stories. We realized we had a lot in common, had traveled and were going to travel to a lot of the same places, and kept up an online friendship. 6 months later, our paths finally crossed in Brazil, where she was born. My first time meeting Becca was on Christmas Day in Rio de Janeiro. She invited @christabellatravels and I over for dinner at her family’s home…anddd that’s where it began. 4 months after that, she invited me to join her on a road trip from Montana to Canada. After, we flew to California together, and now, we’re Airbnb hopping around the state. @lakearrowhead lodge was our first stop, and we (clearly) had an amazing time. We’ve spent 2.5 weeks together so far and haven’t killed each other, so I’d say we’re doing alright. . I can’t be the only one that has made a new friend through @instagram. Tell me your stories!

Travel Goals

Don’t embark on a journey before making a list of things you want to see. Your travel companion might have different goals, and you can avoid conflicts and reach a compromise by figuring out what you want to see and explore together.

@hippieinheelsblog would have been 30 today. Every year on my birthday she'd write to me teasing me for being such an old woman, and a couple of weeks later I'd write to her teasing her for the very same thing. But this year I spent my birthday saying goodbye to Rachel, with her family and friends whom under any other circumstances I would have been thrilled to finally be meeting. Instead my heart was filled with such anger that day, and I didn't think I'd ever get over how impossibly cruel life can be. Judging from my meltdown in the junk food aisle (Rachel's fave) yesterday I'm far from over it, but since it's her birthday I thought maybe I could at least open my heart to accepting the gift Rachel left me with. I miss Rachel every day, but the truth is in the years we were friends the longest we ever spent together was the two weeks we traveled through Panama. We were long-distance friends. But now I feel Rachel here with me every day, giving me business advice as she always did, making fun of my questionable fashion choices as she always did, reassuring me with her unending optimism when life feels heavy, and always, always encouraging me to go for dessert. I'll probably have to stop this junk food binge honoring of Rachel, but I'll never stop considering her one of my dearest friends – even if she did once tell me that my poop smells just like her grandmother's 💩🌸. So while lately I've been feeling quite let down by this wonder we call life, today I'm grateful for the day Rachel was born ❤️🙏💐

Daily Schedule

It’s very difficult to make plans with your friend if you’re not on the same schedule. Discus their daily habits to figure out if they’ll be able to get up early, eat on the go and spend the entire day sightseeing without taking afternoon naps.
