Birds are often a source of wonder and joy for people. They can be incredibly beautiful in appearance, and many have glorious songs and calls that are exciting to hear. Their flight is often associated with a sense of freedom and wildness that fills people with awe. This may be even more true for migratory birds, who can fly thousands of miles each year to change their habitat based on the season. Here are some that fly to and from the UK which can be a joy to witness.

Cuckoos

These delightful birds are better known by their call than their appearance. You’ll know when one is nearby as you can hear its distinctive “cuckoo” call. If you do spot one, they are light grey with a light line pattern across their chest.

Swallows

These are some of the best-known migratory birds and for many spotting one is the first sign of summer. You can spot them due to their iconic shape with their curved wings and long tail streamers.

Swifts

Another bird that many associate with the start of the summer season. These quirky birds are known for the way they hurtle along streets and the accompanying screams they make. These fascinating creatures do everything while flying, with the only exception being to lay their eggs.

House Martins

These sweet little birds are similar in appearance to swifts and swallows but can be identified by their blue coloring and choice to nest in manmade structures such as houses and barns.
