Using makeup products past their expiration date is a common practice, but it can actually be quite damaging – especially when it comes to eye makeup.

Mascara is one of the items most of us keep around much longer than we actually should, but now’s the time to change that habit.

Experts say you should replace mascara every three months if you’re using it on a regular basis. There’s the potential of contaminating your mascara with germs every time you use it – not because you’re doing something wrong, but because that’s just the way things are.

In the best case scenario, nothing will go wrong if you keep using mascara longer than you should, but there are certain risks involved. Eye infections and irritation can be caused by old mascaras that have been contaminated with germs over time.

The three-month rule is a general guideline, but if you’re not using your mascara on a regular basis, pay attention to its performance. Once you notice it drying out and flaking, it’s time to toss it and buy a new tube.
