Hostels aren’t exactly synonymous with comfort, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying to make the best of your stay. Many budget travelers turn to this type of accommodation to save money, and our useful tips will help you put a comfy and cozy twist on your next stay.

Pick Carefully

Not all hostels are created equal and they don’t provide the same kind of comfort. Reading the reviews before making your booking is the best way to remove bad apples. Pay extra close attention to what previous guests said about comfort, and go for a hostel with comfy beds that offer privacy curtains.

Book a Private Room

If staying at a shared dorm simply isn’t your thing, booking a private room is always an option. You’ll get your own comfy bed and quieter atmosphere, so it’s worth putting in some extra money during a long trip, even if it’s only for a day or two.

Pack Smart

A couple of small accessories go a long way and can make your hostel stay extra cozy, even when you’re traveling light. Earplugs and an eye mask can make a huge difference at a busy hostel because they’ll make it easier to deal with noisy guests.

If you’re a young and broke traveler exploring the world on a budget, staying at a hostel might feel like a great way to save some money. Unfortunately, hostels come with a long list of hidden expenses that you’re probably not aware of, but we’re here to help you avoid them.

Towels/Linens

Towels—and even bed linens—at some budget-friendly hostels don’t come free. Read the reviews or contact the hostel to check if they’re included in the price, and consider bringing your own if that’s not the case.

Padlocks

You’ll find free security lockers at pretty much every hostel dorm, but padlocks aren’t always provided, so it’s a good idea to bring your own.

Breakfast

Free breakfast isn’t an amenity that most budget-friendly hostels provide. Luckily, there’s no need to pay for it as long as there’s a shared kitchen on the premises where you can prepare your own food.

Fun Activities

From walking tours to pub crawls, hostels often have many fun activities in store. Unfortunately, you’ll usually have to pay to take part, but doing your own planning is always an option—and it won’t cost you a dime!

Laundry Service

Some hostels offer a washer and dryer on the premises, but it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to use them free of charge. If they’re too expensive, consider washing your clothes by hand or looking for a cheaper laundromat nearby.

Staying at a hostel is a great way to save money on your next trip, but there’s a couple of things you should always bring along after booking a room because it’s highly unlikely they’ll be provided.

Slippers

If you’re going to be using a shared bathroom during your hostel stay, bringing a pair of slippers or flip flops along is always a good idea.

Toiletries

Hostels that provide free toiletries are extremely rare, so make sure to pack tiny bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel before catching your flights.

So, true story, my husband and I once rode camels around the Egyptian Pyramids. 🐪 I know, it sounds fantastically glamorous, but it was far from it. We were deathly ill from something we ate and spent the entire camel ride on the verge of getting sick while simultaneously plotting our escape. To make matters worse, our ten year old tour guide was awfully sketchy and barely spoke English. We had no idea what was happening or where we were heading. The desert was nothing like the magazine pictures depicted, garbage littered the sand in all directions and the Cairo smog was heavy in the air. We celebrated our survival in the desert by immediately checking out of our bed bug infested hostel and into the Hilton where we stayed for two days straight recovering from food poisoning. . You guys, two things saved me during that pitiful recovery. 1. A well stocked travel toiletry kit. 2. The Project Runway marathon that played in Arabic in our hotel room for those two full days 💃🏼 . When preparing for a trip, a well organized and stocked toiletry bag will have all the comforts of home but in an accessible travel sized version. I love using a vacation as an excuse to try out travel sized versions of more expensive toiletries I wouldn’t normally buy. We also never leave home without a mini medicine cabinet of first aid supplies for this exact situation. You can use a daily vitamin dispenser to pack a small sampling of all the essentials. Should illness strike, no language barrier will get in the way of relief. . Moral of the story. Taking the time to thoughtfully pack for a trip can save you the stress and headache of searching for a particular medication while on the road. Also, avoid bed bug infested hostels and eating street food while in Egypt 🐪 💁🏼‍♀️ . 📷: @jessiebennettphotography ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Towels

You can find towels at any hostel, but you’ll usually have to pay a fee to rent one. They tend to be pretty pricy, so why not save some extra money by bringing your own?

Safety Lock

Rooms in hostel dorms are always the cheapest, and they usually come with security lockers where you can store your stuff. Bring your own padlock for safety, because they’re rarely free of charge.
