Everyone should keep a “maybe box” in their home. A maybe box is a box of things that you keep away for a few months to see if you actually need the things inside of it, or if you could do away with them. There are a few tricks to nail a maybe box, so here are some tips to get started.

Time

Once you go through your things and you decide to keep, donate, and then finally put things into the maybe box, put it away and don’t look at it for at least a couple of months. This will give you time to readjust to life without the items, and see how much you miss using or having them.

Memory

Once it has been at least a couple months, before you open the box try to see if you can remember everything you put in there. If you find that you’re having trouble remembering, that can be a good sign that you actually don’t need the things in the box anymore!

Reintroducing

If there are things in the box that you want back into your home, find a physical place to put them instead of tossing them somewhere. This is more intentional and will make the item feel more special.

Whether you love to cook or only do it occasionally, there is always temptation about new and better kitchen products out there. From seeing your favorite chefs on TV to just browsing the aisles at a store, kitchen products are everywhere. But, with all that spending and storing, it can get really wasteful, so that’s why it’s healthier to keep a minimalist kitchen. This doesn’t mean that you only have 2 cups and 1 fork, but really thinking about the necessary tools for your kitchen to function.

Usability

Before you buy something new for your kitchen, think about why and when you would use it. Would it help you eat healthier? Or does something in your kitchen already exist to function similarly? Asking yourself these questions before your purchase really helps.

Space

If your kitchen is already overcrowded, don’t keep buying! Make yourself a rule that you have to give away a certain amount of items before you buy something new. Not only will this help you save space, but also really force yourself to make hard decisions.

Quality

You can find cheap kitchen tools all over, but if the quality isn’t good, they’ll break and you’ll just have to get a new one. Instead, save up for your tools and invest in high quality ones that last.

Kitchen

Even if you are an avid cook, think about how many things in the kitchen you actually need. Can some of your items be used in many ways? Asking yourself these kinds of questions will help get rid of things you don’t need. This also goes for food, because there’s no point in buying products you won’t eat and then having to waste money by throwing them away.

Books

Books can take up a lot of space in a room, and after you read them most likely you won’t use them again. Instead, consider only keeping the ones you love enough to reread or to loan to friends, and go to your public library to get books you want to read instead of buying new ones. This will not only save you space but money as well!

Minimalism is a concept that prioritizes clean, uncluttered spaces with as few things as possible. Though for most people it’s impossible to become totally minimalist, there are some simple ways for you to make your space feel lighter and more minimal.

Junk

Go through those junk drawers, boxes, and closets, and actually get rid of all those things that you are saving for a special occasion or last month’s newspapers. By physically getting rid of things you create more space in your home and in your mind.

Clothes

Most people own more clothes than they actually need, so do yourself a favor and start donating and selling the ones that you don’t wear so much or even like. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in 2 months and it’s within the season you’re in, give it up.

Want vs. Need

Something that you can do while or even before you go shopping is to think whether you want something or need something. This will help you save money by purchasing less, but it will also help you own less things. This also goes for food, as food waste is huge in most of the developed world.

The simplicity of life is something many people are aspiring to achieve in the age of consumerism and being overwhelmed with stuff. New trends come from all around the world, from Scandinavia to Asia. Whether you follow the philosophy of Hygge, Ikigai, CĆ²sagach, Lagom, or something else is a personal preference. The point behind all of them is making your life simpler and more enjoyable.

Micro-living fits into this mindset perfectly. It emphasizes lowering the overall consumption by living in smaller spaces. This enables people to spend less electricity, to store less stuff, to spend less time maintaining everything, and, in return, to live more.

Micro-living is a great challenge for architecture. Many architects today are devoted to making small spaces comfortable for daily life and they are achieving it in the most creative ways.

The trend spreads over to other areas of life, such as travel and health. When traveling in ‘micro’ style, people visit one destination and explore it in depth, rather than constantly moving from place to place. In terms of health, many incorporate short, high-intensity training into their busy schedules, as well as 5-minute meditation sessions that are often enough to regain control over a busy day.

Does it sound tempting to you?
