The age old question is still debated amongst many people; do you need to separate your lights from your darks or can you throw everything into the washing machine together and forget about it? The answer is complicated and really is based off of the clothes you plan on washing, so let this guide help you do your laundry better and more efficiently.

New Clothes

The best rule of thumb when washing new clothes is to always separate lights from darks. Any color really will have fresh dye in the fabric, which means that it is very likely to bleed when being washed, so it is best to keep them away from your lights and whites. But, after you have washed them a few times, you do not have to separate them anymore and can wash as usual.

Fabric Types

If you do not feel like separating your clothes by color, you should really consider separating them by fabric type. That does not necessarily mean that each type of fabric needs to be washed separately, but mostly things that can be washed cold or need to be washed on delicate like silks, satin, and undergarments should be washed together.
