40+ Lawyers Reveal the Strangest Things People Tried to Include in Their Wills

When it comes to final wishes, some people take the opportunity to get a little creative—or downright bizarre. While most wills are straightforward, every so often, a lawyer encounters a request that leaves them completely baffled.

From strange conditions to unusual gifts, these lawyers took to Reddit to share all the weird things people have tried to include in their wills. You won't believe some of the crazy things these lawyers have seen!

Love, Not Legacy

U/wazhazhegrl: "My grandpa had a provision in his will which stated that the inheritance he left to my dad (the youngest of his three children and basically a terrible person) should then be passed onto me upon his (my dad’s) death.

Love, Not Legacy

After Grandpa was diagnosed with terminal cancer he found out my dad was planning on making yet another one of his poor, selfish, greedy decisions. My grandpa warned him that he would be completely disinherited if he went through with it. He did. When I read the will the last line of it said 'And to my youngest son (dad’s name), I leave only my love.' The most heartbreaking words I’ve ever read."

Tortoise Trouble Ahead

U/sunlit_cairn: "Here comes another annoying Not-a-lawyer-but comment, but my Aunt, who I’m not even that close to, has it in her will that I will inherit her Tortoise. She got this tortoise when I was around 8 years old, and I showed a little interest because I was 8 and it was about the size of my palm. It’s a sulcata tortoise, so the last time I saw it, it was about twice the size of my cat. It’s very healthy so will probably live another 50-60 years.

Tortoise Trouble Ahead

I have said on many occasions that under no circumstances do I want this tortoise. I do not want the burden of trying to find a home for the tortoise because I don’t want it. She just laughs it off and leaves her will as is. My only hope is she lives a long life and the tortoise doesn’t."

Awkward Will

U/Cocoah83: "I’m the executor of my grandmother’s will. I also get the house and everything in it and a share of life insurance that’s split three ways between myself, sister, and mom. My mom has always said that all my dad , my grandmothers son-in-law, would like to have is some table.

Awkward Will

Well in the will there’s like a whole paragraph that states how my dad gets nothing, he doesn’t lay a finger on any thing in the house or any money. How my dad is basically worthless and deserves nothing and how he was a [terrible] dad and that she begrudgingly has my mom in the will. Thanks grandma I’ll appreciate the awkwardness."

Quirky Heirlooms

U/PBandJoe: "When my great aunt whom I barely had any relationship with died, I discovered that in her will, she left me a taxidermied giant silk moth that she had hanging on her wall.

Quirky Heirlooms

Evidently someone told her about my love for bugs. I still have it and it's one of the coolest things in my collection of odd knickknacks. …she left my cousin a Furby."

Sugar, Spice, Legacy

U/primeirofilho: "I can think of two. One was a wealthy physician, who left the income in trust for his sister and niece, and upon their deaths, a scholarship would be established. That part was normal. The scholarship was for 5ft8 redheaded males, who could place an ancestor on the Mayflower, and who were studying medicine.

Sugar, Spice, Legacy

It stipulated that on no account could they have studied or have practiced as a chiropractor. Basically, he wanted a scholarship for people just like him. Another was a lady who specified that Def Leppard's Pour some Sugar on me be played at her funeral."

Ride Forever

U/motherinlawstongue: "Guy on the reservation had no family, was big into his Harley. Wanted everything to go to the tribe. however, he said he wanted to be buried with the bike, in riding position, upside down, under his favorite stretch of road. We spent some time explaining why this was not likely to happen. He was insistent that his buddies already knew the deal and agreed. he just wanted it in writing for the rest of his assets.

Ride Forever

With a few different clauses we put it in with some contingencies. It was interesting but honestly more of a headache than anything else. I don't expect this to be enforced, but if his riding buddies just do it anyways, at least in spirit, I would not be surprised. Cool dude. Awesome tatoos."
