How often do you wash your clothes? We’re used to throwing most garments in the washer after one use, but that’s not the case with jeans. What’s a recommended laundry schedule for jeans anyway? That depends on a couple of factors.

The darker the jeans, the less often you want to wash them. Your deep indigo jeans will quickly fade if you repeatedly torture them in the washing machine, especially if you don’t put effort to turn them inside out and use a detergent designed for dark clothes.

Another thing you need to consider is how dirty do your jeans get. If you spend most of your time at home, in car, and in the office, your jeans can last longer between the washes. They acquire most of the dirt and bacteria from your skin, which means that you should wash them after several uses regardless of if they look dirty to you.

If you know what it’s like to pull a garment out of the dryer only to realize that it can now fit your dog instead of you, you probably want to know if there’s anything you can do to unshrink it. There are some tricks and we’re sharing them with you today, although it’s not guaranteed they will work every time.

Before it even happens, know that you should be extra careful with fabrics like cotton and wool. Garments with loose construction are more likely to shrink. Don’t be surprised if your favorite knitted sweater becomes much smaller after drying because it has enough empty room to go more compact.

If an accident happens, what can you do? You can try stretching it out by washing it with mild soap, gently rinsing and leaving to air-dry. For t-shirts and other cotton items, try this method:

  • Fill a basin with warm water and add 3 tablespoons of hair conditioner.
  • Soak the shirt for five minutes.
  • Rinse and stretch it out on a flat surface.
  • Use heavy objects to keep it stretched until it dries.

A lot of people think you have to wait until all the towels in your house are dirty so you’ll have enough to do a good load of laundry. However, the idea that you can only wash your towels together without any other items is false! Although the material of the towels does affect the wash, there are some items than can be washed with towels just fine.

Cotton

Anything cotton, whether that’s shirts, socks, or bedding can be washed with towels. Cotton is a durable fabric that doesn’t need a lot of special treatment when it comes to washing, so it goes great in a load with towels.

Jeans

Although jeans don’t need to be washed often, when you do, you can throw them in with towels. The only caveat to jeans is that you need to remember to turn them inside out before you wash them. This protects the color of the jeans making them last even longer.

What Not to Wash

One of the biggest arguments people have against washing towels with other items is that towels can give off a lot of lint, but it depends on how you’re washing things. The best way to wash towels with any other items is to dry them separately. However, if you don’t have the time for that, it’s recommended not to wash towels with fleece, leggings, and other things that take on lint easily.

A lot of people in the world do their laundry, and automatically chuck the clothes into a drying machine. However, that is not always the best way to go. Many places in the world don’t utilize dryers for many reasons, and they can often be pretty pricey. But beyond that, there are so many good reasons to hang dry your clothes, and here are just a few.

Environmentally Friendly

Drying your clothes uses up energy, which is not sustainable for the environment. Instead, air-drying your clothes uses no energy and is very sustainable. Besides that, you will save on your monthly energy bill which will help you in other ways.

Clothing Needs

Even if a label says you can machine dry an item, you never want to take the chance just in case it’s wrong. Machines can wrinkle, shrink, and possible ruin an item of clothing. But, if you hang dry it, there’s no way it can get ruined and will save you from having to replace your favorite clothing.

Natural Whitener

If you have leave your white clothes outside to dry, whether it’s on a line or on a rack, you can naturally whiten your clothes! This saves you the time and energy you would normally use to bleach stains, so it’s a complete win-win.

The age old question is still debated amongst many people; do you need to separate your lights from your darks or can you throw everything into the washing machine together and forget about it? The answer is complicated and really is based off of the clothes you plan on washing, so let this guide help you do your laundry better and more efficiently.

New Clothes

The best rule of thumb when washing new clothes is to always separate lights from darks. Any color really will have fresh dye in the fabric, which means that it is very likely to bleed when being washed, so it is best to keep them away from your lights and whites. But, after you have washed them a few times, you do not have to separate them anymore and can wash as usual.

Fabric Types

If you do not feel like separating your clothes by color, you should really consider separating them by fabric type. That does not necessarily mean that each type of fabric needs to be washed separately, but mostly things that can be washed cold or need to be washed on delicate like silks, satin, and undergarments should be washed together.
