What is Freeganism?

Freeganism is a term that combines the word “free” and “vegan”. Freeganism is the ideology of not participating in classical consumerism by purchasing little to no goods, whether that is housing, clothing, and even food.

Being a freegan is definitely a lifestyle change, and often involves a lot of scavenging to find the resources necessary to survive. But, it is an interesting way to save money, as well as lower waste production.

In the US alone, 70 billion pounds of food is thrown away each year. While a part of that comes from households, a lot of that comes from restaurants, delis, and other food establishments. Because of strict sell-by dates and laws, everyday food establishments throw away tons of usable food, often that are wrapped up in plastic. To avoid that waste going to a landfill, a lot of people “dumpster dive” and get tons of free food. Although it might seem extreme, why not throw on a pair of rubber gloves and give it a try?

Clothing is another huge area of waste. Instead of buying more clothes, look to your friends and see if anyone wants to have a clothing swap. This way you can get new clothes without spending money or wasting resources.

What a successful clothing swap we co-hosted with @lauriergreen, thanks to our amazing volunteers! 💜 Tons of people left happy with some "new" items to take home with them, and out of the incredible 800 lbs of clothes (dozens and dozens and dozens of bags worth), nothing will be headed to the landfill. We picked out some items for @oneroofyouthservices from their donation wishlist online 👕 We invited @robynleprix, who was part of the sustainable fashion day, to pick out some gems for her secondhand designer clothing company 👗 We kept any wrecked textiles for @shreddedenactuslaurier to turn into stuffing for pillows 🛏 We gave any material that was good but had an issue with it (e.g. a stain or tear) to @kamil__ahmed to repurpose into a "new" amazing piece of clothing donations 👔 The rest of the clothing was taken to St. John's downtown for their Open Closet, an event where anyone in need could come and get free clothes 🧦 Any non-clothing items left were taken to @thriftonkent, who do great work for our community 📚 If we would have taken the clothing to Value Village, we would have saved a ton of time and labour, but lots of it would have ended up in the landfill (they receive more than they sell), and prices would have been marked up for capitalist profit and become inaccessible for those in need 🚫 Swap don't shop! And never throw out textiles ♻️ #zerowaste #zerowastelaurier #clothingswap #stopfastfashion #communitysupport #sustainablefashion #KWawesome #climatejustice #capitalismkills
