Getting your hair done at the salon on a regular basis can be pricey. Luckily, there are tonnes of trusted hair dyes available so you can do your hair from home.

Unfortunately, DIY hair jobs can often involve stains on your forehead and ears or an uneven dye. Worse still, you might end up missing bits at the back.

If any of this sounds familiar, here are 5 handy tips to help you master the DIY dye.

Buy Two Boxes If You Need

If you have very thick hair or hair that goes passed your shoulders, you’ll almost definitely need two boxes. Don’t try to make one box last because you’re less likely to get full coverage.

Vaseline

Before applying the dye, rub vaseline on the skin below your hairline and the tops of your ears. This means that if the hair dye does go on your skin, you can wipe it off with ease and avoid messy stains.

Section Your Hair

Hair colorists advise dying your hair from the back to front. The best way to do this is to divide your hair into section using a fine toothed comb.

Touch Up Your Roots

A common mistake people make when they need to touch-up their roots is to redye the entire thing. The ends of your hair absorb the dye much more easily and repeat dying will result in a darker color at the bottom than the top.

Condition

Conditioning your hair after is a must. Not only will it make your hair feel soft and less damaged, it will also close the cuticles and prevent the dye from continuing to work, resulting in a darker color than you wanted.
