Nowadays, eating healthy is more of a priority than ever before. While some people have the luxury of time and skill to make their own food, those who don’t but have money to spend choose to let professionals take over and help them out. But, do you know what the difference between a private chef and a meal prepper is? Let’s find out!

Private Chef

The job of a private chef is to prepare meals for just one family, usually at least one per day if not multiple. A private chef also might travel with a family or cook for dinner parties. Private chefs become salaried employees to whatever family they work for, so it’s really stable.

Meal Prepper

Professional meal prepping is a relatively new field, and very similar to what a personal chef does. Personal chefs and meal preppers both send menus to their clients to approve, they shop, clean up the kitchen once they’re done cooking, including taking out the trash.

But, usually, the difference is between the two is that a meal prepper will provide health-centered food for their clients, and also prepare snacks instead of just focusing in on meals. They also use meal prepping materials like certain containers so their clients can take their food on the go or eat it at home.

Wooden cutting boards are not only a great way to add some country aesthetic to your home, but they are actually safer to use than a plastic cutting board, contrary to belief. They also can last you much longer, especially if you take care of them properly. Here are some good tips to let your wooden cutting board last and last.

Cleaning

For regular everyday use, you can just clean your cutting board with soap and water. But, it’s highly suggested that at least once a week you give your board a good scrub. The best tools to use is half a lemon and kosher salt. Spread the salt all over the board and use the lemon to scrub it around in circular motions. Wash off the salt with warm water and your board will be clean and bacteria free.

View this post on Instagram

Wooden cutting boards have gotten a bad rap over the years, but research has shown that a wooden cutting board is no worse than a plastic cutting board in terms of harboring bacteria, you just want to make sure you are properly caring for them! First rule of thumb, have at least two different cutting boards; one for raw meat/poultry and another for fresh produce/bread. This helps cut down on cross-contamination by preventing bacteria on a cutting board used for raw meat from coming into contact with a food that does not require additional cooking. Next up, properly clean your cutting board. We are focusing on wooden cutting boards today, but make sure you know the proper way to clean whatever cutting board it is you have in your home! Steps to cleaning your WOODEN cutting board: Wash your wooden cutting board down with hot water and soap. DO NOT soak it in water or put it in the dishwasher as doing so can cause it to split, crack or warp. Pour 3% hydrogen peroxide over the board and let it sit for a few minutes to kill off germs and then rinse it off. Dry it immediately and stand it upright so air can circulate on all sides thus decreasing the amount of bacteria as there is no moisture it can use to grow. Troubleshooting odors and stains: Wooden cutting boards can hold onto odors. To help remove any smell that may be lingering, wipe down your cutting board down with some white vinegar and allow it to air dry. If you are dealing with stubborn stains, sprinkle some coarse sea salt or baking soda on the board and use a lemon wedge as a sponge and go over the surface of it. When your board starts to look dull and dried out, apply a small amount of mineral oil with a damp rag to revitalize it. On occasion, do an extra deep clean of your wooden cutting boards with diluted bleach (1 teaspoon of bleach to 1 quart of water). Spread it over the board and let it stand for a few minutes before rinsing with hot water. Always remember that your cutting boards (wooden or not) will need to be replaced once it becomes heavily scarred; those grooves can trap bacteria and transfer it to whatever food you will be using on it next.

What Type of Wood?

There are many types of wood you can get for a cutting board, but the best option would be to get a type that is hardwood like maple. This is because softer woods will not only ruin your knives but will allow bacteria into the board through the knife marks and be more difficult to get it out.

Almost everyone will tell you that soup is delicious, but if you wait until the next day to eat it, it’ll be even better. Why is that? This is the most true for soups that have whole chunks in it still, as well as stews, but not always anything that has been blended. The idea that something cooked tastes better after time time and not fresh off the stove is a little strange, but in the case of soup, it’s actually true.

Absorption

Time in the refrigerator only does good for soup. This is because it gives it time for all of the bits in the soup, whether that’s veggies, beans, meats, or more, to absorb more of the liquid. This will make the soup much more flavorful because every bite will be infused with flavor.

Softening

Not only are the ingredients softening more while they sit in the broth, but the flavors of the ingredients are mellowing out as well. If you have any harsher flavors in the soup, you will find that they begin a bit softer as they sit in the liquid, and altogether the soup will become more harmonious. One reason for this is because when the soup cools down, the molecules inside the foods get closer which some might say creates a more singular flavor.

Mmm…. while the days are getting longer and warmer, I am still in my winter patterns until after the snow disappears… and for me, that means lots of soups and stews!!!! 🥘🥣🍜 This tortilla soup, sans tortilla made by @gillianscookery is not only gorgeous, but also warming and delicious!!!! Check out the recipe below: – To make: Sauté 1 chopped onion and 3 minced garlic cloves in a heavy bottom pot with 4 T olive oil until translucent. Add 1/2 tsp cumin and stir. Add 4 cups broth (I used 2 cups chicken bone broth and 2 cups veggie stock), 2 skinless chicken breasts, and 1 tsp salt. Simmer covered for about 1 to 2 hrs on very very low until tender and pulls apart easily with a fork. . Reserve a cup or 2 of the stock. Add 1 can of drained and rinsed black beans, 1 cup frozen corn, and 1 diced red bell pepper. Add to pot and cook gently for about 15 minutes. . In high speed blender, combine 2 cups of reserved broth with 1 can full fat coconut milk, a bunch of cilantro, 2 big handfuls of spinach, and 1 small can of diced green chilies. Blend until smooth and pour back into the pot. Add juice of 1 or 2 limes and season with salt as necessary. . Serve with cilantro, hot sauce, radishes, pickled onions, a drizzle of olive oil or whatever you’d like. . Thai curries are super delicious and very versatile. The only thing you really need to make them is curry paste and coconut milk, both of which can be found at Asian grocery stores. After that, it’s totally up to you what goes into the curry, which means you can switch it up a lot and accommodate all your friends and family’s taste preferences.

Recipe

  1. Start by cutting an onion and mince some ginger and garlic.
  2. Heat up oil in a pot and add in the onion. Cook until transparent.
  3. You can then add it any other vegetables you want to saute a bit before you boil. That can be sweet potatoes, peppers, or any denser foods.
  4. Add in the garlic and ginger and cook for another minute.
  5. Then, add in a tablespoon of curry paste and cook it out for a couple of minutes. If you want more spice and flavor, add more than 1 tablespoon.
  6. Finally, cover everything in coconut milk and water or broth and let it come to a gentle boil. You can also add in lentils at this time if you want.
  7. Lower it to a simmer and cook for at least 15 minutes or until all the vegetables and proteins have been cooked through.
  8. Serve with a garnish of lime and cilantro and some rice on the side and you have the perfect meal.
