What the Heck is Tulum Chic?

Tulum is a popular beach destination in Mexico that is also praised for it’s gorgeous, unique interior design. A lot of people call the style “Tulum chic”, and basically all that means is an interior design plan that uses a solid neutral base but mixes in different textures, materials, and small pops of bright color.

If you want to get this effect in your home, there are some easy ways to do it.

Neutral Base

A big thing with Tulum chic design is to start with a general color for the room that won’t stand out too much, but that also doesn’t easily fade into the background. Good colors for this are grays and cremes. This can be shown on a couch, in wall color, floors, and more.

Textures

Mixing textures in a Tulum chic room is super important because that really brings the room to life and gives it more personality. Don’t be afraid to mix materials like marble and wood, even though they can feel like very different design schemes.

Easy ways to get this effect is by covering your existing surfaces with marble contact paper and using wood accents to make the room really come alive.

When I posted my kitchen a few days ago I got so many DM’s and messages about my contact paper/sticky back plastic work surfaces. More messages than I’ve ever had about anything EVER. So I wanted to do a special post dedicated to my sheer love of it. If you swipe you’ll see the before. When we moved in our builder got this piece of worktop as in off cut for about £30. It’s a sort of dark pretend wood. Which is fine if you’ve got a palatial kitchen, but not when it’s teeny. So I knew I wanted to cover it. I’d never done it before but I’d seen other accounts do it. Mainly @denoffoxes springs to mind. I bought it from @lovewilko and a year later I’d say it’s it’s still in good condition. It has the odd little ding, but for the grand total of about £20 I’m so happy with it. It’s heat resistant up to 75c and totally wipeable. This is in no way an advert or any of that nonsense, just someone who has an odd amount of enthusiasm for sticky back plastic. Oh, and it comes in sooooo many different designs and is totally removable so fab for renters as well! Go forth, stick. 🙋🏻‍♀️ #myhousethismonth #kitchenrevamp #diykitchen #budgetmakeover #apartmenttherapy #kitchenmakeover #kitcheninspo #budgetinterior #sassyhomestyle #calamine #dcfix #contactpaper #marblecontactpaper #diycrafts #budgetdiy #revamprestylereveal #kitchenfacelift #moreismoredecor #mybeautifulmess #interior4all #reclaimedwood #scaffoldingshelves #pinkkitchen #pinkhomedecor #sassyhomestyle #colourmyhome #myhomevibe #elledecoration #fablon #realhomesofinstagram
