Instructions:

Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Mix them with a stand mixer for 30 seconds on the low speed. All ingredients should form an even consistency.

Turn the speed up to medium. Pour the warm water and the vegetable oil as well. You should keep on mixing until the ingredients form a dough. Once it’s done, transfer it to the spot in the kitchen where you’ll be making the tortillas.

This recipe is meant for 12 to 14 homemade tortillas, which means you should divide the dough into that many parts. Form each piece into a round flat tortilla. Place a towel over them and wait for 15 minutes.

Grab a pan and set the heat to medium-high. Use extra flour on both sides of the dough. Cook each one for 1 minute per side. Once you notice bubbles appearing on the surface, that’s a sign that you should flip them.

After 20 years of making what I thought were the absolute best homemade tortillas, this all-butter recipe made me realize that sometimes good things can get even better. Let me explain… . In March of 2017, I published the homemade tortilla recipe I’d been making for at least 20 years. It called for using corn oil and it was really super good. . However, I recently purchased Nopalito, an incredible Mexican food cookbook from Gonzalo Guzman, head chef at the San Francisco restaurant of the same name – @nopalitosf Gonzalo makes his homemade flour tortillas with butter. . I’d been using corn oil for decades because a sweet little Mexican grandmother told me to. She wasn’t wrong. Flour tortillas made with corn oil are delicious. But, using butter makes them EVEN BETTER. Not just a little bit better. A LOT better. Markedly so. Noticeably so. . So. This simple pleasure – soft, warm, homemade flour tortillas – that was already one of the best things in the whole wide world just got even better. Life is good. . {Get the all-butter Homemade Flour Tortilla recipe by clicking on the link in my profile.} . . . @guzmangonzalogonzalez #mexicankitchen #homemadetortillas #tortillas #flourtortillas #slowfood #homemadeisbetter #ofbatteranddough #f52grams #huffposttaste #foodandwine #thekitchn #buzzfeedfood #eeeeeats #feedfeed #tastespotting #dailymeal #buzzfeast #bhgfood #foodgawker #forkfeed #yahoofood #goodmoodfood #mexicanfood #alittleandalot #denverfoodphotographer @bloombergpursuits #todayfood #f52bakingclub #bakinglife @thefeedfeed @huffposttaste #wsbakeclub

People waste food all the time, especially when they think there’s not enough to use in a meal. However, even if you have just a bit of an ingredient left in a jar, you should be creative and use it! Not only will you be less wasteful, but it gives you the opportunity to try new ways of doing things. Plus, both of these recipes can be taken on the go!

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is the perfect addition to overnight oats because it brings a bit of sweetness, an awesome flavor, and a ton of protein! And even if you only have a bit left in the jar, use it anyway!

Pour in 1/3-1/2 cup of rolled oats into the jar, and use that same amount of yogurt and milk and pour them in as well. Stir it and leave it in the fridge overnight. Shake before you eat it and enjoy breakfast on the go!

Mayo

You might think the end of the mayo jar is useless, but it’s really gold! Use the last few smears of it to make a quick chicken salad to go.

Add in 1 cutlet of chicken, shredded, along with 2 tablespoons of mustard, 1 tablespoon of raisins, and 3 tablespoons of cubed apples. Mix everything in the jar and you have the perfect lunch!

If you’ve ever been in a position where you come home from work and school and you need to make dinner but have no idea what you want, you’re not alone. It can be really difficult to decide what to have for dinner when you’re mind goes blank on anything you actually like and can cook, which is why keeping a recipe box is so handy.

A recipe box is a collection of index cards where you write down the name and recipe for your favorite dishes. Although this is a super old school kind of thing, it’s actually really useful if you live a busy life but still want to cook homemade meals.

All you have to do is get index cards and after you make something you like, write it down with as best detail as you can manage while not making it too long.

After a long day of work, coming home and just flipping through your recipe box will help you out so much because it takes the research out of your quest for dinner. Instead of surfing the web for an hour just to find out what you want to eat, you only need a few minutes of perusing your recipe box and you’ll find exactly what you want to cook in no time!

If you have ever tried to cut into a baguette that has been in your pantry for a little too long and not found it to be the soft, luscious loaf it used to be, you are not alone. However, stale bread can be saved so easily and in a very delicious way by making it into croutons!  This recipe is so easy and can not only help amp up your cooking but also reduce your food waste in the process.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtjuA_elU1c/

Recipe

  1. First, start off with any stale bread you have. That can be a ciabatta, baguette, sliced bread, anything that just is not amazing anymore.
  2. Then, cut the bread into cubes that are relative all the same size so they cook evenly.
  3. Put the bread on a baking sheet and drizzle over olive oil, salt, pepper, and whatever other seasonings you like. Some nice pairings are dried Italian herbs, paprika, or even cumin for a Latin-inspired salad.
  4. Then, put the bread into a 375 F oven for 5-10 minutes, until the bread has browned nicely.
  5. Allow them to cool, and then pair them with your favorite salads! You can also put them into soups to add crunch instead of dipping bread into it.

Ghee is a type of fat used in cooking that is made from butter. Ghee is essentially butter without the milk fat, so there’s no hormones or lactose that’s normally present in butter.

Though it’s healthier, and really delicious, ghee can often be super expensive. Luckily, you can make it at home in a snap and save yourself a lot of money!

Recipe

  1. The best type of butter to use when making ghee is something organic, high quality, and cultured if you can.
  2. Put the butter in a pot and heat over medium-high and allow it melt.
  3. Once the butter is melted, it will start to bubble but don’t worry! Just leave it be. If the bubbles are too big, turn down the heat to a simmer.
  4. Then, the bubbles will break up and there will be no more foam.
  5. Stir the butter every once in a while and then wait until it foams again and the mixture becomes a little darker in color, but not burnt.
  6. When it’s done, the foam should have some brown bits on top.
  7. Turn off the heat and wait for it to cool before you strain it.
  8. Put cheesecloth over a fine mesh strainer and pour the butter through.
  9. Jar it, and keep it in your pantry for at least a month if it lasts that long!

Matzo is a type of cracker that is eaten during the holiday of Passover. If you’re somewhere where you can’t get matzo for the holiday, don’t worry! You can always make it at home, and since the dough doesn’t need to rise, you can get it done it a snap.

Recipe

  1. Start by preheating your oven to the highest setting, 500F if possible, and put in a pizza stone or baking sheet in there to get hot.
  2. In a large bowl, sift in 4 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour. To that, add 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  3. Slowly pour in 3/4 cup of warm water until the dough starts to come together. If it’s still too dry, add in more water. If it’s too wet, add in more flour.
  4. Once everything is combined, divide the dough into 8 sections.
  5. Take one section at a time and flatten it with a rolling pin or a pasta maker. If you do roll it by hand, you won’t get it as thin, but do it as much as you can.
  6. Trim the edges to get a rectangular shape and prick the dough with a fork to release the steam and give you that signature matzo look.
  7. Put the dough in the oven for 30-90 seconds on the first side, and then flip and bake for another 15-30 seconds and you’re done!

Making your own detergent, shampoo, conditioner, fabric softener, cleaning products is the best thing you can think of. Instead of opting for store-bought alternatives which are filled with chemicals, you can always choose the natural version. These products are safe for your whole family and for the environment as well. If you want your clothes to be super-soft and smell amazingly, check out the recipe below.

Ingredients:

For this DIY fabric softener you need 1/2 cup baking soda, 2 cups of Epsom salt, 20-30 drops of essential oil, and a container. For the essential oil you can use whichever type that you like. It can also be a mix of several different ones. When it comes to the Epsom salt, a good substitute is sea salt as well.

Instructions:

Get a bowl and combine the 2 cups of Epsom salt with the 20-30 drops of essential oil or oils. Mix the ingredients well, then add 1/2 cup of baking soda. Stir again until everything is blended together. Fill the container with the fabric softener and make sure that you cover it with a lid. Leave it in a dry and cold place.

To use it you will need to add 2-3 tablespoons of it to the clothes. After you’ve added, you can rinse the clothes.

Almost everyone will tell you that soup is delicious, but if you wait until the next day to eat it, it’ll be even better. Why is that? This is the most true for soups that have whole chunks in it still, as well as stews, but not always anything that has been blended. The idea that something cooked tastes better after time time and not fresh off the stove is a little strange, but in the case of soup, it’s actually true.

Absorption

Time in the refrigerator only does good for soup. This is because it gives it time for all of the bits in the soup, whether that’s veggies, beans, meats, or more, to absorb more of the liquid. This will make the soup much more flavorful because every bite will be infused with flavor.

Softening

Not only are the ingredients softening more while they sit in the broth, but the flavors of the ingredients are mellowing out as well. If you have any harsher flavors in the soup, you will find that they begin a bit softer as they sit in the liquid, and altogether the soup will become more harmonious. One reason for this is because when the soup cools down, the molecules inside the foods get closer which some might say creates a more singular flavor.

Mmm…. while the days are getting longer and warmer, I am still in my winter patterns until after the snow disappears… and for me, that means lots of soups and stews!!!! 🥘🥣🍜 This tortilla soup, sans tortilla made by @gillianscookery is not only gorgeous, but also warming and delicious!!!! Check out the recipe below: – To make: Sauté 1 chopped onion and 3 minced garlic cloves in a heavy bottom pot with 4 T olive oil until translucent. Add 1/2 tsp cumin and stir. Add 4 cups broth (I used 2 cups chicken bone broth and 2 cups veggie stock), 2 skinless chicken breasts, and 1 tsp salt. Simmer covered for about 1 to 2 hrs on very very low until tender and pulls apart easily with a fork. . Reserve a cup or 2 of the stock. Add 1 can of drained and rinsed black beans, 1 cup frozen corn, and 1 diced red bell pepper. Add to pot and cook gently for about 15 minutes. . In high speed blender, combine 2 cups of reserved broth with 1 can full fat coconut milk, a bunch of cilantro, 2 big handfuls of spinach, and 1 small can of diced green chilies. Blend until smooth and pour back into the pot. Add juice of 1 or 2 limes and season with salt as necessary. . Serve with cilantro, hot sauce, radishes, pickled onions, a drizzle of olive oil or whatever you’d like. . It’s always important to show manners when you’ve been invited to someone’s home for a holiday dinner. Sometimes it can be hard for a host to ask for things they actually need, so take the initiative and plan to bring something. Whether that’s food, a gift, or something else entirely, you should never show up to someone’s home empty handed!

Alcohol

Bringing a bottle of wine or some craft beer is always a good idea! A holiday dinner can never have too much alcohol, and if there is already enough, it’s nice to have something for the host to have later on.

Homemade Sweets

Making something like fudge or caramel and wrapping them up into individual pieces is such a fabulous present to bring to someones home. Not only does it shoes that you are grateful to have been invited, but it’s also a delicious treat that everyone will appreciate.

Ask the Host

Some people are shy about hosting and feel they have to do everything themselves. Reach out to the host several days before the dinner and suggest a few things you can bring. Whether that is a homemade soup, salad, or making a signature cocktail, it never hurts to ask.

Recipe
